JumpTV is a pioneer in the delivery of international television over the Internet. With over 190 channels from 65+ countries, JumpTV delivers its subscribers full-screen news, sports and entertainment content on a real-time basis from all corners of the globe. JumpTV has subscribers in over 80 countries who view channels on the JumpTV online network via ordinary Internet connections on their home computers, laptops, Internet-enabled televisions and mobile phones.
I joined JumpTV as the COO in June 2005 at the urging of my frequent business partner, Kaleil Isaza Tuzman and JumpTV's CEO, Scott Paterson. The opportunity was unique becuase the Broadcast Television industry has been in the midst of a tectonic shift due to the advent of IPTV, massive increases of broadband to home in the United States (and around the world). Getting involved at the beginning of the process of building this type of media company was an opportunity I couldn't resist.
In June, 2005, JumpTV had about 22 TV stations online, a staff of 3 which included Farell Miller (CEO and co-founder), Dan O'Hara (CTO and co-founder), and Mizan Chowdhury (Technical Support Manager). For 3 years they had bootstrapped the business, spending almost no money and building the basis for what will hopefully become a business that changes the way people around the world consume international TV. Scott Paterson knew the timing was right to take the business to the next level, so he raised a significant amount of venture capital and started investing in upgrading the infrastructure and the augmenting the staff. Kaleil's job was to bring in more content by signing up new international TV Stations to long term, exclusive relationships. Mine was to build out a staff in NYC to manage the channel relationships, and to develop the product and the technology team.
In my first year at JumpTV we launched JumpTV 2.0, increased site traffic by 10x, and added 100 channels. By March 2006 JumpTV had nearly 60 employees around the world and our New York office had almost 35 people managing relationships across nearly every time zone. You could come into the office in the middle of the night to find people on the phone to Asia, Africa, or the Middle East.
At this time, with the plans for the IPO under full swing, JumpTV hired Alex J Blum out of AOL to join as the COO. JumpTV 3.0 was already well underway and with his help we were able to release JumpTV 3.0 in the summer of 2006. The IPO in August 2006 raised $60m at $5.50 per share and by October our stock price was nearly $10 and amazingly we were able to raise another $100m in a secondary offering.
During this time JumpTV was strictly focused as a branded desitination, B2C web site. We were still subscription only, but we did start to add advertising to the mix and by early 2007, JumpTV was focused on a 100% ad supported model. It was also in early 2007 that the poor decision to become a distribution only company was made. This meant we would not develop our branded, desintation web site any further and instead would focus on sublicensing our content to large consumer web sites like Terra.com, AOL.com, and so forth.
